YouTube videos are used by chemistry students as learning tools; however, little is known about how design features can constrain or promote learning. This study analyzes the features of oxidation-reduction videos using Mayer's Multimedia Principles and generates important findings to guide chemistry learning that includes YouTube videos.
Hannah is a second-year Integrated Science Secondary Education major with a concentration in Biology. She is also studying for a minor in Spanish and hopes pursue a career as a high school science teacher.
Dr. Y. (Professor of Chemistry, Center for Teaching Excellence Director) facilitates the YRG to improve chemistry conceptual understanding by examining the dynamics of teaching and teacher change. She is the Principal Investigator of the VisChem project, a Fellow of the American Chemical Society, and a former high school chemistry teacher.
This project has allowed me to critically explore an area of research that is directly related to my future career. As a future science teacher, understanding how to maximize and properly use YouTube videos in an educational setting is crucial, and the research that I have conducted in this project has allowed me to do just that. Each week, I was able to grow and apply feedback from my mentor professor as I sought answers to questions that are vital to the field of education today. I plan to continue my research and to seek out opportunities for growth in my career development.
Throughout research, I have gathered data and analyzed results and information in deep and meaningful ways that have allowed me to understand ways in which it may address my research questions. I approached this project with a focused plan of action and was able to effectively communicate and present the results of my research in a concise and cohesive poster.
This project was the first major step for me into the professional world. Creating a poster that portrays weeks worth of research and hard work is evidence of my professional drive and development. I have ensured that my presentation of my work is polished and that each detail is well thought out. I am very serious about my work and I believe that my poster and presentation of my research demonstrates that well.
Embarking on this research journey exposed me to many different forms and uses of technology that I had not previously considered. I learned how to analyze data and to efficiently navigate several technological applications, specifically Excel and Powerpoint. Additionally, the entire basis of this research is an exploration into the current day uses of technology, through an analysis of YouTube videos and their content. Overall, I believe that my understanding of how to best use technology, specifically as a future educator, has grown tremendously through this project.
